Ball Joint
Ball Joints
A ball joint is a pivoting suspension component that connects the steering knuckle to the control arm, functioning much like the ball-and-socket joint in a human hip. It allows the wheel assembly to move freely up and down with the suspension while also pivoting left and right for steering.
Ball joints bear the weight of the vehicle and must withstand constant movement, road vibration, and varying loads. They consist of a steel ball stud housed within a lubricated metal or polymer socket, enclosed in a protective rubber boot that keeps grease in and dirt and moisture out.
When ball joints wear out, they can cause symptoms such as clunking noises, uneven tyre wear, wandering steering, or vibration — and if severely neglected, a failed ball joint can cause a wheel to collapse entirely, making them a critical safety component on any vehicle.
