Brake Master Cylinder
A brake master cylinder is a hydraulic device that pushes fluid through the brake lines to the brakes. It's a key part of a vehicle's braking system, converting the force of the brake pedal into hydraulic pressure that activates the brake calipers.
A brake master cylinder has the following components:
Lever or pedal, Piston, Spring return, Pushrod, Bore, Piston assembly, Reservoir, Brake fluid.
Here are some signs that your brake master cylinder might need to be replaced:
- Your brake pedal feels spongy or goes to the floor
- Brake fluid is leaking or looks dirty
- Your check engine or brake warning light comes on
- Your car “weaves” when braking
While it's possible to drive without a master cylinder, you won't be able to stop. Driving with a faulty brake master cylinder can lead to reduced braking efficiency and complete brake failure.
Replacing a brake master cylinder can cost between $300 and $800, with most of the cost being labor.
