Clutch Master Cylinder
A clutch master cylinder (CMC) is a part of a car's clutch system that transmits pressure from the clutch pedal to the clutch itself. This allows the driver to engage the clutch and change gears.
A CMC converts mechanical force into hydraulic pressure. When the driver presses the clutch pedal, the pedal lever applies force to the CMC, which transmits hydraulic pressure to the clutch release (slave) cylinder.
Some symptoms of a failing CMC include:
- A spongy clutch pedal
- Gear clashing or hard gears when shifting
- Hydraulic leakages
- Low hydraulic fluid pressure in the system due to internal leaks
- A hising sound when pressing the clutch pedal
- The brake fluid is low
- The clutch is suddenly easier to press
- The brake fluid is dark
- Difficulty changing gears
- The clutch pedal pushes down but doesn't come back up
A CMC can last around 100,000 to 150,000 miles, depending on driving conditions and vehicle usage. However, it can be susceptible to leaks, worn out seals, and corrosion.
